Guides & Technical Notes

This guide will display specific help full length guides showing from start to finish how to complete specific tasks that should work for you in Debian

Hello and Welcome,

A few years ago I really needed to get to grips with a low cost system to do administrative tasks as well as networking tasks. Doing so with Windows required numerous prerequisites for software and licences of which the customer did'nt want to pay for and had the constraint of not being able to restart their systems whenever the applications required it in order to run a piece of software. I needed a solution. I looked into using Linux and chose Debian so that i wouldn't have to compile everything from source but at the same time wouldn't need a heavy GUI filled with applications i didn't need. I found so much overwhelming information online when trying to setup something basic. Most responses were RTFM (Read the F'ing Manual). As much as that works, if like me you don't have time to read through hundreds of pages of complex commands and attributes when you just want to get something running quickly for either yourself or your customers. I struggled with this for two years and in some ways still am. But the purpose here is to explain all the information I currently have on using Debian to people that have absolutely no knowledge what so ever possible from only a Windows Background with the goal to be able to do a handful of tasks to give you a starting point in learning and understanding an OS that isn't just Windows.

Below starting with Video 1, will outline from installing a VM through to customising the system. i will explain how to remotely control the system securely and how to perform administrative tasks most network professionals would deem a must have.

Here I would advise anyone looking at moving focus over to Debian to install Virtual Box. wThis will allow you to create a virtual hard drive on your PC as an application through Windows. I wouldn't advise to wipe your Hard Drives and just install fro scratch because you don't know what your doing and you'll just get frustrated. Baby steps will help with progression much more effectively.

Therefore i have created this video that explains how to setup Virtual Box before installing Debian itself.
